Community News, July 4th Celebration Highlights, & A Look Ahead
Hello again from Mayor Kim Johnson.
First of all I wanted to extend my deepest thanks to all those who worked so hard to ensure our community had a fun filled July 4th weekend.
There are so many that work behind the scenes prior, during and afterwards. I have had so many people approach me from out of town complimenting us on the number of parade entries we had this year! Thanks to all of you who took time to be in our parade. It made for an enjoyable time for all ages. So once again I ran out of parade ‘goodies’ just over the railroad tracks. I thought I had it planned better but alas, either the crowd was larger or I stink at planning. I have heard some approximate money revenue numbers for our July 4th celebration. The auction generated approximately $13,400 - WOW! Thanks for all that provided donations and those that bought these items. The golf outing generated $4000 and $3000 was received in can donations to help cover the cost of those amazing fireworks. We are so blessed to have continued support for our community.
Another thank you is needed for our pool director and staff who have provided an adult swim/exercise time from 12:00-1:00.
I hope I have that time correct. This is not an organized event, just come over and ‘do your swim thing’! I have heard that the crowd is increasing each time so if you haven’t had a chance, come on out and enjoy some adult exercise time. I haven’t had a chance yet to show up but I am hearing it is great and those going are thoroughly enjoying it and appreciate the opportunity to get their bodies movin’ and groovin’.
Just a few general town requests.
As we continue to have many visitors to our town during the summer months, please continue to show our community pride by keeping your lawns mowed and property ‘tidy’. Also I was reminded that if you are lucky to have a family member or friend that is enjoying riding a moped that the driver needs to be 14 years of age or older and have a moped license. I always wanted a moped but opted for a Harley motorcycle in my 50’s - lol.
I wanted to continue to update you on the possibility of a pickleball court(s).
I had the pleasure of attending and listening to a nice turn out of community residents. This get together was arranged by a few community residents. On July 10 I then met with a group of representatives to further this discussion. We seem to have a few ‘next steps’ for continued discussion and planning that would involve seeking several grants. When more steps are solidified, this information will continue to be shared. Get your pickleball equipment in your shopping carts!
Here’s another update regarding my pending move and term as mayor.
After discussion with the lawyer who supports various city issues, we have determined that I will resign, effective September 1. Linda Thilges, Pro Tem, will serve out the remainder of this mayor assignment. Did you know ‘pro tem’ is a latin term meaning ‘in the time being’? She can also still serve in her current role as city council representative and will be able to vote. We also learned that the mayor to be elected in November will begin this term immediately vs waiting until January like I had done. That’s exciting! I copied and pasted the rest of this paragraph from last month’s column because I still like how I wrote it - lol. I continue to encourage you to think about your possible desire to run for Mayor in the November election. It has been such a rewarding experience. I had only lived here for 3 years before running and serving as your mayor and have met so many wonderful community members. I have learned how fortunate we are to have all of our city employees as well as our city council members. Our council meetings are always open to the public so feel free to stop in and watch a meeting if you think this might be a future calling for your life. They are held the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 7:00 at City Hall. Talk to your families, your friends, coworkers and/or acquaintances about this terrific opportunity.
Enjoy the rest of your July.
I am starting to see back to school ads and items in stores and it makes me sad to think that summer is flying by. Be assured that there is no cost for this column. We are very fortunate to still have an actual newspaper that serves our community.
